Purpose:
- Responsible for the maintenance and development of the music program of the Wharton
United Community Church at St. John’s. This includes providing service music, leading
hymns, and coordinating, rehearsing and directing the choir for Sunday morning services
and any special services throughout the year including, but not limited to, Ash Wednesday,
Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and Christmas Eve.
Characteristics:
- Be familiar with traditional and contemporary Christian worship music with openness to
expanding our musical styles.
Duties:
- Be organized and prepared for rehearsals and services. For example, the Director should
establish at least one evening choir rehearsal per week of approximately one hour duration
and, if necessary, spend a half hour prior to a Service to go through anthem and hymns. - Meet with the Worship Committee monthly and the pastor weekly to plan the coming
month’s services to create meaningful and excellent worship. - Keep the tenor of all music presentations worshipful rather than performance-driven.
- Be willing to do performances outside the Church as requested.
- Maintain music library and purchase new music as needed.
- Work with Council to develop annual music budget (October/November).
- Perform funerals and weddings as requested for additional compensation.
Supervisory Controls & Evaluation:
- Creativity and motivation on the part of the Music/Choir Director is welcomed and
encouraged. However, the Worship Committee and pastor(s) have ultimate authority over
the vision of worship at Wharton United Community Church at St. John’s. - Any grievances shall come first to the Pastor, and if not resolved, to the Staff-Parish
Relations Committee/Council. - Review at 3 months of employment and annually thereafter with pastor and Council
representative.
Compensation:
- Approximate salary range $10,000 – $13,000, based upon experience.
