On February 14, the United Methodist Church (UMC) in Madison held a joint Ash Wednesday worship service, both in-person and live-streamed, with Drew Theological School.
The Rev. Mark Schol gave an introduction to Lent, reminding the congregation of the centuries-long tradition of spiritual preparation. In his homily he focused on Isaiah 6:1-8 and encouraged people to say, like the prophet, “Here am I; send me!”
Rev. Schol and the Rev. Tanya Linn Bennett, Drew’s Chaplain and the Associate Dean for Vocation and Formation imposes ashes on worshipers. Ash Wednesday service was a time for reflection and repentance, as the congregation prepared for the season of Lent. It was a reminder that no one is perfect and we all need God’s grace and mercy in our lives.
Among Drew seminarians who participated in the program, Cody Beckett led the call to worship, Francis Osuji opened with prayer, and Peasipa Namoa read scripture. Professor Mark Miller led the congregation’s worship in music. And Beth Quick, Craig Chapel Graduate Assistant, helped prepare the order of worship.
Schol and Drew seminarians also went out to offer ashes-on-the-go to neighbors and morning rush-hour travelers at the Madison Train Station.
During this Lenten season, in the Schol’s words, “Let us scan ourselves and invite God to come and fill up” the places and parts of ourselves we know need God’s mercy, care, and love.
