Eighteen years ago, the unification of Ocean Gate UMC and Trinity UMC, now known as Faith Community UMC, brought together two congregations into one, creating a stronger, more vibrant community of faith. This year, Faith Community UMC celebrates the 100th anniversary of Ocean Gate Church, a milestone that marks a century of unwavering commitment to God and dedicated service to the local community.
The story of Ocean Gate Church began in 1909 with Reverend Oliver, the pastor of Island Heights Methodist Church, who rowed across the Toms River every Sunday to teach Sunday School at the Grant Homestead. His devotion laid the foundation for what would eventually become a thriving congregation. In 1910, Reverend Oliver received $200 in seed money from the Methodist Conference, and by 1911, a small church was built on Point Pleasant Avenue to accommodate the growing number of worshippers.
As the church expanded, it quickly outgrew its initial building. One of its most devoted members, Mrs. Olivia McAllister, known affectionately as “Mrs. Mac,” worked tirelessly to raise funds for a new church. Her passion and perseverance led to the laying of the cornerstone for the current building at E. Bayview and Asbury Avenue in 1924. In recognition of her extraordinary service, the church established “McAllister Day,” celebrated each August. Today, thanks to the stewardship of Bill Wentzien, historian of Faith Community UMC, the rich heritage of Ocean Gate Church continues to be honored and preserved.
The 100th anniversary celebration was a true testament to the spirit of community and collaboration. The success of the event was made possible through the dedication of Faith Community UMC, with contributions from the Ocean Gate Historical Society. Together, they prepared food, set up tables and tents, organized the sanctuary, provided beautiful choir music, gathered historical materials, and completed vital renovations of the building. These collective efforts created a meaningful and memorable celebration of both faith and history.
The event opened with prayers and blessings from District Superintendent of the Central District, Rev. Ronell Howard. A proclamation from Senator Carmen Amato of District 9 recognized Ocean Gate Church for its century of service to the community. A special presentation was given by current pastor ChangYong Shin, honoring Police Officer Vincent “Vinnie” Pelino, who was the first to report the fire that impacted the church in 2022, showing the deep connections between the church and its community.
Former pastor Charlie Soper also delivered heartfelt remarks, reflecting on the lasting impact Ocean Gate Church has had on its members and the broader community. Despite facing challenges, including the devastating fire, the church remains steadfast in its mission. The ongoing partnership with Breakout Ministries, led by Pastors Phil and Dina Salerno, continues to enrich the congregation’s outreach and service efforts.
As Ocean Gate Church celebrates its centennial, the congregation is filled with gratitude for the grace that has sustained the church for 100 years. Through the challenges and triumphs, it remains a place of worship, a beacon of hope, and a testament to God’s faithfulness. By His grace, the church continues its mission to worship, serve, and proclaim the gospel, ready to face the future with faith and confidence. Here’s to another century of faith-filled service and devotion!
